Clinical Medical Ethics Consultation

This is a 7-week course that meets each week for 90-minute sessions. The purpose of this course is to familiarize attendees with a modern approach to ethics consultation in a Health System that is based upon the University of Chicago model. The textbook is Clinical Ethics, A Practical Approach to Ethical Decisions in Clinical Medicine by Jonsen, Siegler and Winslade (McGraw Hill LANGE, 9th edition). We will also use a workbook developed by Dr. Ellen Fox, MD from the Integrated Ethics program for the Veterans Health Administration Ethics Consultation Responding to Ethics Questions in Health Care. The course is most beneficial for in-person attendance due to the inter-active nature of teaching by the Socratic method with inter-active role play built into the six modules in the workbook.

1. To apply the Georgetown Principles of Bioethics to patient care
2. To formulate the ethics question to address a request for ethics consultation
3. To perform an ethical analysis in a clinical case using the Four Box Method

1. To recognize the role of social work in the interdisciplinary care of critically ill patients and their families.
2. To identify psychosocial, financial, and discharge planning needs that impact patient care and coordinate appropriate social work referrals.
3. To collaborate effectively with social workers to address complex issues, including family dynamics, goals of care, advance care planning, community resource utilization, and transitions of care.
